One of Our Own - Dora Furlong (2015)

3 of 5 stars
Read July 28th-31st, 2015

The first published book by Dora Furlong, an adventuresome, and at times dark, fast-paced space-opera story.

Full disclosure: Dora is a friend of mine. While I don't think that this influences my opinion of the book, I felt I needed to mention that.

The writing is brisk, and well constructed, the pace very quick. It tells the story of 16 year old Aethan Ghais, already a trained and experienced assassin, whose mother is very highly placed within the hierarchy of the Empire, second only to the Empress herself. He's a badass - enhanced in various ways, highly trained, and yet, still very much an adolescent trying to find a place for himself in the world.

He is sent to conduct a mission outside of his normal purview, an attempt to find and extract two operatives who have gone missing on a distant world. What follows is a page-turner with lots of exciting action and struggle, both as part of the mission, and with his relationships to the others he meets, and with the woman who sent him there.

Recommended if you enjoy fast-paced, action-packed space opera.
